The impressive win by the Liam Birchley, Eagle Farm trained Arcup in last Saturday’s $131,000 Capricorn Sales 2yo Classic at Callaghan Park, Rockhampton again endorsed the Sale’s claims as Australia’s best value yearling sale.
Highly respected as a judge of young horses, Liam Birchley selected Arcup from the draft of Stewart Park Stud at last year’s Capricorn Yearling Sale and secured him at the auction for only $5,000.
The Encores (NZ) x Zeebelle colt is raced by a partnership of stable clients, Brian, Bernie & Chris Dodson and Scott Stevens from Rockhampton, John Philps from Gladstone and Mark McLean from Bundaberg. The Capricorn Sales 2yo Classic was the richest race run in Queensland on Saturday and the winner’s prizemoney now takes Arcup’s earnings to over $86,000 from 3 starts to date. “He’s certainly a bargain buy and I expect him to go on to Saturday Metropolitan class,” Liam said.
The high profile Bel Esprit filly, Alesprit, was gallant in defeat. Having her first run for over a month, she led her rivals from settling, and was only collared in the final 30 metres to go down by a long neck. Boberg by Stromberg Carlson, in finishing third, maintained her impressive 4 start record of not yet being out of the money.
Stewart Park Studmaster, Ray Coyne of Alton Downs on Rockhampton’s outskirts, has 4 lots, 3 colts and 1 filly by Arcup’s sire Encores in his draft for the Capricorn Yearling Sale on Sunday week, 19th April at Rockhampton Showgrounds.
They are bred out of dams by Danehill Dancer, Last Tycoon, Spectacular Spy and Pax In Bello.
A total of 110 lots has been selected for the Capricorn Yearling Sale, Queensland’s longest established thoroughbred yearling sale. Sale Agents McCaffrey’s Australian Livestock Marketing believe this year’s event offers the strongest quality and biggest diversity of nationally appealing pedigrees in the Sale’s history. 58 sires are represented and the offering is weighted towards colts, 62, over fillies 48. Importantly, 92 lots are QTIS registered therefore eligible for the QTIS 600 restricted race and bonus scheme.
“This Sale has always been noted as the “Value For Money” sale of Australia,” Ken McCaffrey said. “From small offerings for instance, we have sold a Group Two winner for $3,000, a Group 1 placegetter for $10,000, many other Metropolitan winners Australia wide for under $10,000, and Cup winners from the East Coast to the West Coast of the Nation,” The median price of last year’s Sale was only $10,000.
The rich Capricorn Sales Classic Race Series, exclusive to graduates of the Sale, is a most attractive incentive for Sale buyers.
It’s the richest Race Series in Regional Queensland, its value again increasing by 20% to $180,000 for graduates of this year’s Sale. “We have included a feature 3yo Championship into the Series so all buyers now have eligibility for added exclusive benefits with their Capricorn Sale purchases,” Ken McCaffrey said. “The winners are in our catalogue – they can’t come from anywhere else and with only 110 horses eligible, it’s the best odds in the business for rich race success.” “Astute and progressive trainers such as Liam Birchley recognise the potential and value of the Capricorn Sale,” he added.
Catalogues are available from McCaffrey’s Australian Livestock Marketing, Rockhampton 07-4922 6311.
